Instructions
1. In Kaleidoscope Kreator, open your digital photo and create a kaleidoscope design using the Lotus (08) template shape. You also can use the Star (08) or Flower (08) template shapes. Move the photo around in the workspace and watch the kaleidoscope preview window in the upper, right corner of the screen. Try clicking on the Pinwheel Mode button in the toolbar to see if you prefer that. Click on the Preview button if you want to see a full-screen preview of the kaleidoscope.
2. Place the photo paper in the printer tray. Select File>Custom Print Options>Print Multiple from the menu. Enter 3.5 in the inches field and 2 in the next field, and then click Add. Change the size to 3 inches and click Add. Continue in this manner with 2.5 and 2 inches. Make sure all other boxes are unchecked and then click OK. In the next window, set the printer to the manufacturer’s recommended setting for glossy photo paper and print. Kaleidoscope Kreator will automatically arrange the kaleidoscopes as efficiently as possible. Let the ink dry for a few minutes.
3. While the ink is drying, print one more kaleidoscope on plain paper. Select File>Print Kaleidoscope and enter a size of 3.75 inches. Make sure all of the other boxes are unchecked and click OK. In the next window, set the printer to plain paper and economy or draft mode. Put a piece of plain paper (it can be scratch paper) in the printer and print. (This kaleidoscope will be used as a template for cutting out the cardstock.)
4. Optional: Apply alcohol ink to the back of the glossy photo paper. This provides some color in case the back of the cardstock shows when looking at the ornament from the side. Let dry.
5. Adhere the two squares of cardstock with a removable adhesive. Adhere the kaleidoscope printed on plain paper to the cardstock with removable adhesive. Cut out the kaleidoscope so the cardstock is now the shape of the kaleidoscope. Separate all of the pieces and discard the plain paper kaleidoscope.
6. Cut out the kaleidoscopes on the glossy photo paper. Run a felt-tip marker along the edges to give them a finished look. Work from the back, so if the pen slips, you don’t mark the printed side. (Optional: Apply glitter glue along the outside edge of each kaleidoscope and along the outside edges—on both sides—of each piece of cardstock.)
7. Fold each printed kaleidoscope along the indentations (valleys) of the flower petals. First fold from valley to opposite valley toward the back, so the backsides meet. Crease gently to prevent the photo paper from cracking. Turn the kaleidoscope 90 degrees and fold toward the back again. The two folds should be perpendicular to each other. There should still be two pairs of valleys that have not yet been folded. Fold those toward the front (right sides together). Curl the tips of the petals toward the back.
8. Pierce the center of each kaleidoscope with a paper piercer, then divide the kaleidoscopes into two piles with one of each size in each pile. Starting with one pile, nest the four kaleidoscopes—from the smallest to the largest—by pushing a brad through the center hole. Attach the flower to one of the pieces of cardstock with the same brad and fasten the brad. Repeat with the other pile of kaleidoscopes and cardstock.
9. Attach a loop of cording or ribbon to the back of one of the pieces of cardstock.
10. Use red liner tape (or other strong tape) to adhere the two pieces of cardstock together (positioning so the valleys of one piece line up with the outer tips of the other).
Alternate Cards
The kaleidoscope flower cards are made the same way, but for the smaller flowers, layer two kaleidoscopes instead of four and print one of each size, rather than two. (For example: The sizes of the purple flower card are 2.5, 2.25, 2, 1.75, 1.5 and 1.25 inches.
